Christmas Story: Parents lie

Christmas Carol by the great Juan Jose Millas, of The objects we call published by Seix Barral last October. I found a good way to congratulate the holidays this year. Hope you like:

PARENTS LIE

My brother woke me up at midnight to reveal the next secret:

-Soon will tell you that the Magi are parents. They tell everyone to meet your age. Do not believe. The Kings are but as the largest not know how to explain their existence, they say that, they are the parents.

My brother slept in the next bed. Our relationship is not was neither good nor bad, so sometimes we got along well and sometimes badly. But we were complicit in many things. Smoked their first cigarette together, stolen together also the first coins of the jacket pocket of my father, he made me math homework and I speaking ... We depended on each other, in short, on too many things. As I said it, two stolen horses together are bound to protect. Protecting us going through this kind of confidence in the basic truths of life. If the Kings were and he had learned, was better than I knew it, however hard it was for me.

truth is that I had heard rumors in school that Melchor, Gaspar and Balthazar were the parents. But they had not paid attention. What I could not imagine was that the rumors came from adults. If they already had little respect, they lost it completely after the release of my brother.

Indeed, the same year, when we got the Christmas holidays, my mother called me one day and started to ask me what I thought of the Magi. I told him that I had in high regard (not in this way, of course, a child was not corny), but not always bring me what I wanted, since I took over the world was in many children and could not please everyone. Mom was taken aback, as usual, when a boy band takes the eye in this matter is that the guy is already at the end of the street. I think it was about to give up, but finally took a breath and told me that the Magi were the parents.

"he added, is a lie that we hold in childhood, because childhood is a time of fantastic dreams, but you're old enough to no longer believe in the Kings. To your brother was also said when he was your age.

My brother had told me when I tell the lie that Kings were the parents, pretending that I believed it, otherwise it would seem a strange guy and take me to a psychologist.

-I-said-so pretended. As you will understand, if they stay more relaxed as well, not so hard to please them.

I, then, as I believed it and I went to my room to write the letter to Santa, a letter, for the first time, clandestinely. That year, given that it was a big boy and I took care of the world situation, it was a disaster, I asked for reasonable things in the past. My brother put my letter in the same envelope than his own and undertook to mail them. Interestingly, this was the first year that brought me everything I asked.

Upon returning from Christmas holidays to school, I realized that everyone in my class were told that the Kings were the parents, and everyone had believed. I was about to get them out of their mistake, but my brother told me that not occurred to me, because I would take a madman. The plot to remove this belief from the head of the boys was almost universal and was naive to try to deal with it, weigh the many existing tests, divided into the Bible, Sacred History and the facts themselves, because what truth is that even after you stop believing in people Reyes continued to receive gifts.

I was lucky, in order to maintain that illusion for a lot longer than my colleagues. If I honestly do not remember exactly the age I stopped believing in Santa Claus, maybe when my brother died and his funeral remembered this fantastic story I do not know how it could happen. It is also true that, once installed in the world of adults checked both lying and so free that it would be strange that my brother was right and who also had lied about this. This year, as everyone from that time I wrote a secret letter (in my house no longer believe in the Kings or my kids) and I have brought back everything I asked.

Christmas-Madrid Photos

De Madrid Christmas

Courtesy of the piece to camera from Dona Alba , I have a little walk through the illuminated Madrid these days taking photographs. The curious thing about this year's lighting is that it is a medley of previous years, because with the crisis, the council has decided save that, which is not a bad idea, because some of the tree lights are pretty nice and original!

now to be running slowly works (and Madrid is no longer a city-hole), serve as an excuse to make Christmas lights photos of the town and night court ... Think that is a privilege to enjoy the Madrid-Christmas pictures without having to face the hordes of people that plague the center of the capital these days!

In memoriam - Manny Oquendo

Manny Oquendo
(José Manuel Oquendo)
01ENE1931 - 25MAR2009

always framed in the key, Manny Oquendo left us an important legacy in the implementation of the timpani and bongo. Their sound was influenced by drummers as Oreste Varona, Antolin Suarez Diaz and Ramon Castro Ulpiano, among others. Oquendo had sufficient merit to be in the place reserved only for adults. Pupi Campo, Tito Puente, Jose Curbelo, Tito Rodriguez, Eddie Palmieri, among others, could count on his knowledge of rhythms and Afro-Cuban musical tradition, adding flavor, rhythmic weight and strength. Founder and leader of groups such as Grupo Folklorico Experimental Nuevayorkino and the legendary Conjunto Libre, Manny Oquendo was a worshiper of the true sound of salsa, dense, uncompromising, full of flavor but with due reverence to the key and tradition . A large leaves, whose loss we regret those who bear the Afro-Caribbean citizens.

Uninhibited Realm musician

The artist is always after a relentless pursuit to express their ideas, have a clear and achieve their own sound, which has the supreme merit be identified by it. This is achieved not only through study - crucial thing - but it also requires a lot of daily work and sustained, discipline, the inevitable share of talent, quality, and creativity needed to differentiate themselves. Moreover, the artist should release a series of inhibitions and prejudices which eventually may affect the ideas that the artist wants to express. In the case of music, all that is necessary if we want to transcend and make life the creations are enough to resist the unstoppable passage of time.

All this kind of introduction serves as a framework for sharing a few lines on a really Interestingly titled "Uninhibited Realm" second album of Venezuelan pianist Carlos Cuevas . For this album, Carlos Cuevas us about 6 songs in a trio of jazz concert in three movements for piano trio and chamber orchestra, all composed and arranged by himself Cuevas, who shares the facets of a performer, composer and arranger in the entire disc.

The record leads us to the chart that Cuevas proposed since the beginning of the first bar, where a combination of taste, density and a high level of interpretation are the initial coordinates for undertaking this sound journey with all the fluidity required in work of this nature.

On the piano, Cuevas shows strength, suppleness and an excellent sense of rhythm, with a broad domain of the instrument without exaggerating, giving high doses of sensitivity and good taste to develop a coherent and concrete. In relation to the bass strings, John Patitucci, the undisputed figure of jazz worldwide, provides a variety of colors and textures, shapes expressed right from the bass or electric bass, always with the expertise to which we are accustomed. For his part, Jimmy Branly displays exquisite in execution of the battery, giving each subject a warm and gentle treatment.

"Uninhibited Realm" is an album that shows a musician full of honesty that maintains a constant search for new paths in music, with the expertise and the humility that characterizes those who will surely enjoy the significance of his work. A thrilling album that pleases the ear and keeps alive the spirit through a clear, concrete and uninhibited. Excellent by Carlos Cuevas. And to follow the music. Personal
